- Why isn't AVIF available as an output option for me?
- AVIF output requires your browser to support encoding it, not just viewing it — and as of 2026, that's still mainly recent versions of Chrome. This tool checks your browser's actual capability before offering AVIF, rather than letting you pick it and silently hand you a mislabeled file in a different format.
- Which format should I choose?
- WebP is a solid default — it's supported everywhere, encodes quickly, and produces files 25–35% smaller than JPEG at similar visual quality. AVIF compresses further still where your browser supports encoding it. Use JPG for maximum compatibility with older software, and PNG when you need transparency or lossless quality.
- What happens to transparency when converting to JPG?
- JPG doesn't support transparency, so transparent areas are filled with white before conversion. If you need to preserve transparency, convert to PNG or WebP instead.
- Are my images uploaded anywhere?
- No. Conversion happens entirely in your browser using the Canvas API — your files never leave your device.
